Lawnmowers That Are Also Mulching Mowers

There are plenty of regular garden lawnmowers that can be used as mulching mowers. In fact almost any garden mower can be used as a mulching mower if it can be operated without a grass collection box or bag.

The basic idea behind a mulching mower is that it chops the grass clippings up very small so they can be scattered over the grass to dry and rot down to be taken into the soil by garden worms and turned into humus for the ground.

If you think about the normal way of cutting grass it is to take all the grass that the plant has put so much effort into growing and cutting it off and removing it to a dumping point somewhere. The soil uses up all its nutrients and gets nothing back. This is why gardeners have to add fertilizer to the grass to help it grow. If you scatter the grass clippings over your lawn the soil gets those nutrients back to use again.

Not all grass cutting equipment will leave a nice even spread of grass cuttings if you leave the grassbox off. The shape of the deck of a mower is designed to channel the cuttings into the grass box so removing it may leave a narrow band of collected grass clippings behind it.

Some manufacturers will offer an accessory which can spread the clippings better or have a plate that can be removed from the cutting deck outlet which will allow a better spread of clippings.

Whatever type of lawnmower you use, cutting grass in the morning will allow more sunshine to help dry the grass clippings and they can be scattered with a rake or they may just spread themselves in the breeze and the nutrients will return into the dirt to continue with the growth cycle without the need for fertilizers.
